What is a Seamless MS Pipe?

MS, also known as Mild Steel, is a low carbon steel with a carbon content between 0.05% and 0.25%. A seamless MS pipe is produced without any welded joint. The pipe is formed by heating a solid billet and piercing it to create a hollow section.

The seamless nature of this pipe helps in a lot of ways. Due to no weld seam, it doesn’t have a weak point. The pipe has uniform strength throughout its circumference. This makes seamless pipes suitable for higher pressure and temperature service compared to welded pipes of the same wall thickness.

MS seamless pipes are also called mild steel seamless pipes. The low carbon content gives them excellent weldability - you can weld them using standard procedures without preheat. They are ductile, formable and cost-effective for structural, plumbing, mechanical and general engineering applications.

Properties & Features of MS Pipe Seamless

4 main features make MS pipe seamless a suitable choice:

  • High Ductility: The low carbon makes it easy to form. You can bend it into tight circles. It does not split.
  • Good Weldability: Weld it using MIG, TIG, stick, or submerged arc. No preheat is needed. No heat treatment is required after welding either.
  • Cost-Effective: It is an affordable choice. It costs less than alloy steel. It still does the job for most industries.
  • Uniform Wall Thickness: Making it without a seam keeps the thickness the same. There are no thin spots to worry about.

Mild Steel Seamless Pipe Applications

MS seamless pipes serve diverse applications across 4 major industries:

Structural Construction

It is found in building frames, scaffolding, handrails and general structural support. The uniform strength and weldability make the pipe ideal for fabricated steel structures.

Plumbing and Water Supply

Potable water distribution, drainage systems and plumbing installations use these pipes. Galvanised MS seamless pipes provide corrosion resistance for water service applications.

Mechanical Engineering

Shafts, cylinders, hydraulic lines and machinery components. The seamless construction provides reliable pressure containment for hydraulic systems.

Automotive Industry

Chassis components, exhaust systems and structural tubes. The formability allows complex bends required in automotive fabrication.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between mild steel pipes and seamless steel pipes?

Mild steel describes what the pipe is made of. Seamless describes how we make it. An MS seamless pipe is a low carbon pipe with no joints. Other pipes use a weld. Seamless ones are stronger because they have no seam to fail.
  • How many types of mild steel pipes are there?

There are mainly two types of mild steel pipes based on manufacturing: seamless (SMLS) and welded (ERW). A seamless pipe is made from a solid billet without any weld seam. An ERW pipe is made from a steel strip with an electric resistance welded seam.
  • What is the maximum size available in MS seamless pipe?

MS seamless pipes are typically available up to 450mm NB (18" NPS). Larger sizes above 18" are generally manufactured by welded (LSAW) process. For sizes above 450mm NB, welded construction becomes more practical and cost-effective.
  • Can MS seamless pipe be galvanised?

Yes. MS seamless pipe can be hot-dip galvanised for corrosion protection. The zinc coating shields the steel from rust and weather exposure. Galvanised seamless pipes are widely used in water supply lines and outdoor installations.
