What is SA179 Tube?

ASME SA179 (identical to ASTM A179) covers seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes for tubular heat exchangers, condensers and similar heat transfer equipment. Thermal efficiency matters the most in these applications. The low carbon content helps heat move through the metal fast. During the cold-drawing process, the internal and external surfaces become very smooth. This prevents fouling. It also improves the flow of fluid. These tubes work best with clean fluids at moderate temperatures.

This specification requires every tube to pass a hydrostatic test. We also perform flattening and flaring tests. Our team inspects every piece for dimensional accuracy and surface quality before shipment.

ASME SA179 Tube Specifications

These specifications define the requirements for seamless cold-drawn tubes used in heat transfer applications.

Standard ASTM A179 / ASME SA179
OD Range 1/8" to 3" (3.2mm to 76.2mm)
Wall Thickness BWG (Birmingham Wire Gauge)
Length Fixed or random lengths
Manufacture Seamless, Cold-Drawn
Finish Bright Annealed or Black

Chemical Composition of ASME SA179 Tubes

The chemical composition of ASME SA179 tube ensures it is strong enough for heat exchanger service while ensuring optimal heat transfer.

Element %
Carbon (C) 0.06 - 0.18%
Manganese (Mn) 0.27 - 0.63%
Phosphorus (P) 0.035% max
Sulphur (S) 0.035% max

Mechanical Properties of ASME SA179 Tubes

SA179 Tubes must meet certain mechanical properties to work well in heat transfer applications.

Property Value
Tensile Strength 325 MPa minimum
Yield Strength 180 MPa minimum
Elongation 35% minimum in 2 inches
Hardness 72 HRB maximum

Outside Diameter Tolerance

The varying outside diameter changes the tolerances. Smaller tubes need stricter limits. This is very important for building precise heat exchangers.

Cut Length Tolerance

We cut these tubes to specific lengths so they fit perfectly during assembly. Standard tolerances are used unless closer tolerances are specified. For complete cut length tolerance data, refer to the table below.

Hydrostatic Test Pressures

Each SA179 tube undergoes hydrostatic testing to verify leak-free construction. We calculate the test pressure based on the tube dimensions and the wall thickness. Refer to the table below for complete hydrostatic test pressure requirements.

Applications

SA179 tubes are mainly used in the following 2 applications where you need clean surfaces and high thermal conductivity.

Shell & Tube Exchangers

These are the main heat transfer parts in many plants. One fluid goes through the tubes, while another fluid flows around them in the shell. These tubes are also used in chemical plants for oil coolers and process heaters.

Surface Condensers

Power plants use these for steam condensers. The tubes take exhaust steam from turbines and turn it back into water. This happens by transferring heat into the cooling water. We supply these for main condensers and feedwater heaters.
