What is SAW Pipe?

Submerged Arc Welded pipe, or SAW pipe, is made by welding together pieces of metal using an electric arc that works under a blanket of granular flux material. This creates a high-quality weld that goes deep into the metal. The flux protects the molten weld from the air without any porosity or contamination. The welds come out clean and strong. SAW pipes come in two main types: LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded) and SSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded). The process gives better weld quality than other welding methods. These pipes are suitable for tough applications in oil and gas lines, water supply systems, and structural construction.

Types of Carbon Steel SAW Pipes

Carbon steel SAW pipes are available in three main types based on weld orientation and manufacturing process. LSAW, SSAW/HSAW, and DSAW are the configurations.

Carbon Steel Seamless Pipes
LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded) Pipes
Carbon Steel ERW Pipes
SSAW/HSAW (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) Pipes
Carbon Steel LSAW Pipes
DSAW (Double Submerged Arc Welded) Pipes

SAW Pipe Manufacturing Process

Making these pipes involves a strict set of steps. First, we check the steel plates or coils. Edges are cut to make the right shape for welding. For LSAW, we bend plates into circles. SSAW uses a spiral shape from a coil.

First, a small weld holds it together. We weld the inside first, then the outside to make a strong bond. Sound waves and X-rays are used to check for any hidden holes. We put a lot of pressure on them and fill them with water to see how strong they are. Then we put on the coatings and bevel the ends.

Properties & Features

Carbon steel SAW pipes are suitable for demanding applications due to 4 main features:

  • High Weld Quality: Welds made with submerged arc welding go deep and are clean and strong. There are very few problems.
  • Large Diameter Capability: You can get them in sizes from 16" to over 100" in diameter. These are good for major infrastructure and pipeline projects.
  • High Pressure Rating: Suitable for high-pressure oil and gas transmission pipelines. They need reliable long-term performance.
  • Coating Options: Available with 3LPE, FBE, and coal tar enamel coatings. These protect against corrosion when buried or submerged.

Applications

SAW pipe applications cover 4 major industries that need large-diameter, high-strength piping solutions.

Oil and Gas Transmission Pipelines

Cross-country crude oil and natural gas transmission lines need SAW pipes for their large diameter and high-pressure capability. These pipelines move hydrocarbons over hundreds of kilometers with reliable performance.

Water Transmission

Municipal water supply systems, irrigation networks, and industrial water pipelines use SAW pipes for efficient bulk water transfer over long distances.

Piling and Structural

Foundation piles, offshore platforms, bridge construction, and structural applications use SAW pipes where high load-bearing capacity and structural integrity are essential.

Process Piping

Large diameter process lines in refineries, petrochemical plants, and power stations rely on SAW pipes. They handle various process fluids at controlled temperatures and pressures.

FAQs

  • What is the difference between LSAW and SSAW pipe?

LSAW vs SSAW is about the seam. LSAW has a straight seam and is made from plate. It is better for high pressure. SSAW has a spiral seam and uses coils. It costs less for huge sizes. LSAW is for oil. SSAW is for water or piling.
  • What is the maximum diameter of SAW pipe?

They can be 100" or more. Saw pipe manufacturer in India like ours use spiral methods to get the biggest sizes. It depends on the mill.
